To Start Things Off…
This is a blog for hockey fans to share stories, news and opinions. I’m aiming to update it daily, which shouldn’t be problem while the Stanley Cup Playoffs are in full swing (and what a series it has been!). So join me for all of the news happening on and off the ice.
To start things off, I’ll quickly summarize my feelings of the playoffs thus far. At first I was a bit disappointed to see that my team (Colorado) didn’t even make the playoffs this year but that was quickly diminished when I noted that the Bruins were in. As a young hockey player gracefully wobbling around our local rink, I donned the Bruins’ yellow, black and white. It was an honor to to wear the colors of one of the Original Six, an honor that I carry with me even now (some 20 odd years later) as I fully believe my yellow, black and white socks are the source of all my power on the ice. This year was a resurgence of the Bruins and I was certain that they’d win the Cup for the first time since 1971-72. Then the Hurricanes blew through town after defeating the Devils (what!?) and knocked out the Bruins (WHAT!?!?). The only redeeming fact was that it was a brutal battle to the end.
You can imagine the small sense of satisfaction I got when the Pens (knights in … black, yellow and white) knocked out the ‘Canes in only four games. I do have to hand it to to the ‘Canes though. They did play some pretty nice hockey and I’ve always respected a team that plays good, strong defense. But really, the Pens have just been getting better and better as the postseason rolls on. They certainly deserve to be where they are. Their offense is second to none. I mean, did you see Malkin’s third goal in Game 2 against the ‘Canes?? It was more than brilliant and I think I can safely say that I’ve never seen anything like it. So, here we are with the Pens capturing the Eastern Conference Champs title for the second year in a row.
On the Western side of things, I have to say that I never doubted the Red Wings for a second. I was a bit surprised that their series against the Ducks went all the way down to Game 7, but I knew they’d take it. They are the defending champions. They’ve won the Cup the most out of any American team. They are Stanley Cup beasts! I think this year’s rematch will be pretty interesting. It might be the same names going up against one another, but these are two pretty different teams. With the Pens gaining momentum as they go and Detroit hungry for their 12th Stanley Cup victory, this is going to be a showdown for the ages.
On a side note that could very well decide the outcome of the Finals, Sidney Crosby broke hockey superstition and touched the Prince of Wales Trophy. Nicklas Lindstrom didn’t touch the Campbell Bowl. Jinxed? Not Jinxed? We’ll see …
I’m sure you’re all fully aware but it needs to be said: Game 1 this Saturday, May 30
