Stanley Cup Update
So, I’ve been a little behind in updating my blog, but you know how it goes. Things get busy, the games go by quicker than you’re expecting and the next thing you know you’re five games into the series!
Anyway, my thoughts on it this far:
Games 1 and 2 were all right. I mean, it wasn’t quite the battle that I had expected with Pittsburgh losing 3-1 in both games. In fact, it was almost a complete repeat of the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals. At least this time Pittsburgh didn’t get shut out. As I’m sure many will agree, the most interesting parts about these two games was Crosby taking a swipe at Kirk Matlby for his over enthusiastic celebration after the game, and Malkin’s fight with Zetterberg in the final minute of Game 2.
Games 3 and 4 … now we have a proper Stanley Cup playoff! The Penguins were playing much better in front of the home crowd. I suppose that’s to be expected. But, the offense was finally starting to look as strong as they were going though the postseason. Malkin and Crosby stepped up in a big way, not only with the scoring but with the assists. And who would have thought that Sergei Gonchar was to be the catalyst in Game 3?? I was particularly looking forward to Game 4 because up until then it was a repeat of 2008. Pittsburgh lost in Game 4 last year and I was waiting to see if it was going to continue along its old familiar path. I was happy to see them win.
Game 5. What can I say about Game 5? Detroit seems to be unstoppable with the home ice advantage and they absolutely creamed Pittsburgh. It’s somewhat disappointing because I always like to see games that come right down to the wire (it seems to make a win that much more satisfying). But, Detroit was on tonight. They have been outplaying the Pens in almost every game, and it is pretty likely that they’ll win it again.
As the series heads back to Pittsburgh, I’m thinking that the Pens will take the win (they’ve got to if they want to keep their Cup hopes alive) and the series will go down to Game 7.
Well, Game 6 is on June 9. In the mean time, here are a couple of treats to tide you over ….
