The Colorado Avalanche will kick off the ‘09-’10 season on Oct 1st at home against the San Jose Sharks.  It not only starts off the NHL season, but will also be the night that Joe Sakic’s #19 jersey will be hung from the rafters of the Pepsi Center in retirement.

Other notable games in the first days of the new schedule include the Pittsburgh Penguins raising their 2009 Stanley Cup championship banner in the Mellon Arena on Oct 2 while playing host to the New York Rangers.  The NHL will also take a trip overseas with the Red Wings facing off against the St Louis Blues in Stockholm for the 2nd and 3rd.  On the same nights, the Blackhawks will go up against the Panthers in Finland.

A little further on into the season, the Bruins will host the Flyers in unusual fashion, as they will set up a rink on the historic Fenway Park field.  The Green Monster will oversee the game for the Bridgestone/NHL Winter Classic.  Also, the NHL will be taking a break in mid February as the players disperse to play for their countries in the winter Olympics taking place in Canada.

It’s going to be a season full of interesting games, the above mentioned being the tip of the iceberg.  I can’t wait for it all to get underway.  Only three months until the new season begins.  The first week of the new schedule is listed below.  Stay tuned for more dates.
