Martin Brodeur’s Historic Shutout

Martin Brodeur’s Historic Shutout

Dedicated hockey fans know the name of Terry Sawchuk - a goalie who played 21 seasons in the NHL (1949-1970) and is hailed by many as being the best goalie ever to play in the NHL.  He has a long list of achievements; among them is the record for the most shutouts achieved by a goalie in the NHL when he reached his 103rd shutout before retiring in 1970.  Up until December 7, 2009, this is a record that belonged only to Sawchuk.  However, New Jersey Devils’ netkeeper Martin Brodeur tied this record number by shutting out the Buffalo Sabres 2-0 on Monday night.

Brodeur is the only still active goalie on the Top 22 all-time shutout list.  The next closest active goalie is Detroit’s Chris Osgood with 50 shutouts, putting him in 23rd place. With more than double his closest competitor, Brodeur is solidly sitting in the top spot, which certainly deserves a congratulations!

Watch him try to break Sawchuck’s record as the Devils host the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday Night.
