Tuesday’s Preview

Tuesday’s Preview

With 10 games set to start this Tuesday, here are my picks complete with preview and odds from BetUS.

Florida Panthers v Toronto Maple Leafs
Though a spot in the playoffs is out of the question for the Leafs, they can save themselves from finishing in last place.  The team seems reinvigorated, as they have won three in a row, and six of their last seven games.  The winning streak unfortunately comes too late in the season as they are sitting at the bottom of the Eastern Conference and there are just ten games to go.

The Panthers on the other hand are sitting just three spots outside of the top eight and there’s no chance they’re going to give up at this point.  Florida is seven points behind the number eight spot, making a spot in the playoffs a long shot.  But, coach Peter DeBoer has stated that the team is determined.  They’re coming into this game off a huge 5-2 win over Tampa Bay on Sunday and will likely be hoping to continue with the good momentum.

Toronto and Florida have battled it out three times this season with Toronto taking two victories.  But the most recent game resulted in a 2-0 shutout in favor of the Panthers.  Could they end up splitting the season in this fourth matchup in Toronto?  BetUS is offering the following odds:

Puck Line
Maple Leafs: +1 1/2 -240
Panthers:  -1 1/2 +200

Columbus Blue Jackets v New Jersey Devils
This should be an easy win for the Devils as Columbus is stuck in the basement of the Western Conference.  They’re just one place ahead of the league’s worst Edmonton Oilers.  Though, plenty of people will be wondering what will happen in the race to break the power play drought.  The Blue Jackets have gone 0 for 16 with the advantage and the Devils have gone 0 for 17.  Despite the winner of the overall game, it will be a small victory for whoever takes the first power play goal.

This is the first and only meeting between these two teams this season, and it should result in yet another loss for Columbus.  BetUS is offering the following odds:

Puck Line
Blue Jackets: +1 1/2 -165
Devils: -1 1/2 +145

Boston Bruins v Atlanta Thrashers
This will be one game to watch this week, as it is a battle for the number eight spot in the playoffs.  Boston is sitting just one point ahead of the Thrashers who are looking to steal the eighth spot from the Bruins.  Boston is coming into the game with some good momentum after grabbing a 2-1 win over the Rangers in TD Garden on Sunday.  But they’ll be hitting the road for this single game.  They’re not quite as strong on the road than they are on the home ice, posting a 17-13-6 road record.

The Thrashers are also coming into this one on a high after handing Philly a 1-3 loss on the home ice.  They’ll definitely be playing Boston hard, and could just give them more than they can handle.  Atlanta has some pretty decent offensive power with such players as Nik Antropov, Maxim Afinogenov, Tobias Enstom, and Colby Armstrong.  Antropov has five goals in the last five games, with the others not far behind.

These two teams have met three times previously this season, and all three games have resulted in wins for Boston.  This includes a massive 4-0 shutout in their most recent game.  With both hoping to snatch up a spot in the playoffs, this should be a pretty great game.  BetUS is offering the following odds:

Moneyline
Bruins: -120
Thrashers: Ev

Carolina Hurricanes v Tampa Bay Lightning
For the most part, the Hurricanes have had a pretty unforgettable season.  But, in recent weeks, they have managed to gain some ground.  They picked up a big win against the Caps last Thursday, and followed it up with a nail-biting victory over Pittsburgh.  Unfortunately the winning streak came to an end against the Sabres on Sunday, but their recent performances have been reminiscent of their miracle playoff run last season.  They have shown that they can handle big teams.  A playoff run isn’t in the cards this season, but they have managed to drag themselves up the latter in the East.

On the other side of the ice, the Lightning were as high in the standings as number five, but the team’s success has come to a skidding halt.  They’ve lost five in a row and have dropped down to number 14.  The scoring has dried up as Martin St Louis has gone seven straight games without a goal, and Alex Tanquay has gone 15 without a goal.  They’ll be hoping to get back on track against the Canes, but with the shift in power, they might just suffer their sixth straight loss.

These two teams have met four times already this season with two wins going to each.  They’ll be facing off two more times, including this game.  BetUS is offering the following odds:

Moneyline
Hurricanes: -105
Lightening: -115
